Day One: May 31st, 2018

On my first day, I met the other employees (there were only five including myself, as this is still a start-up company). The company founders are Heather Einhorn and Adam Staffaroni. Laura Martin is the creative assistant and internship coordinator, and Gayle Artino is a writer.

I previously met Adam over spring break; so today, he introduced me to everyone else as the company's "summer associate."

Adam briefed me on what I will be doing this summer. What stuck with me the most during our conversation is there are three very important things one must learn in creativity: reading, writing, and drawing. You should learn these things while you're young, because you won't have time when you're an adult.

Originally, I was going to work through a guided drawing session with Laura for the first ten weeks. Each week, we would discuss a particular facet of drawing, and I would complete exercises and/or demonstrations within the office related to that topic, followed by a weekly (drawing) assignment. The drawing assignments would have been completed on location (DUMBO in Brooklyn), and from home.

However, the
curriculum has changed. I will now focus on the creation and development of creative projects and provide coverage (constructive feedback and detailed synopsis of media). Such creative projects will include comics, animation, serialized podcasts, and web series.

Before I can dive into any of that, I must learn the basics; so I was assigned to read Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics: The Invisible Art (1993) from cover to cover. I finished it on the first day; and
Adam and Laura gave me permission to read their other McCloud books throughout the summer, including Reinventing Comics (2000) and Making Comics (2006).
