Day Fourteen: July 25th, 2018

Today was just more research. Adam and Heather are still away.

Day Thirteen: July 18th, 2018

Today was my first day of research. As I mentioned several times before, I am not allowed to mention anything about the content because I signed a contract that forbids discussing anything created at Einhorn's Epic Productions. Unless I bring in a draft of my pitch, all of my blog posts from this point forward will be a very short update on my research.

Day Twelve: July 17th, 2018

Today was a very eventful day. First, I read and did coverage for draft two of the season finale for EEP's podcast. I didn't know it at the time, but this was the last coverage I'll do for the rest of my internship. After this, Adam gave me two books to skim through, New York: Then and Now by Marcia Reiss and Evan Joseph, and New York City: A Short History by George J. Lankevich. The former was a picture book, and the latter was a novel. While I was skimming through the second book, Adam called Laura and I into a private room. He scheduled a conference call with Shawn Kiddleton specifically for me, as Adam wants me to help him as a writer's assistant. Shawn explained how he spun his experience from a Rushkoff assistant to a writing career. His expectations were nowhere near what he thought was going to happen. He graduated from NYU with a Bachelor in Playwriting, and got a job at HBO in the legal department. However, what he really wanted to do was write comic...

Day Eleven: July 12th, 2018

Not much happened today either. I reread and did coverage for the sixth and final episode of EEP's original podcast. After emailing it to Laura, she sent me a link to the podcast's character breakdowns. The entire staff (including myself) started this breakdown weeks ago, but the last few episodes weren't written at the time. Now that all the writing is done, I was assigned to go back and skim all six episodes for any new characters that weren't yet part of the breakdown list. I only had to add one character, but I added more information to several other biographies/descriptions. Next week, I will have another one-on-one meeting with Adam before he and Heather head to San Diego Comic-Con.

Day Ten: July 11th, 2018

Not much happened at the office today. I read and did coverage for episodes four and five of the podcast. Laura also sent me a draft for the sixth and final episode of the season. I read it, but I didn't have time to do coverage for it. I'll do the coverage next time. It wasn't that eventful today because I didn't work on my pitch or do coverage for other books, but that's okay because I absolutely love this podcast. I feel privileged to have read and critiqued the script before it's even made into an actual podcast (voice actors recording it)!

Day Nine: July 5th, 2018

Over the weekend, the book Heather recommended, Pitch Anything by Oren Klaff, came in and I started reading it. At the beginning of work, Laura sent me drafts for the next two episodes (four and five) of EEP's original podcast. She also handed me a book called "One Last Summer" by Jillian and Mariko Tamari. Laura gave me the option to either read and do coverage of episodes four and five, or do the same thing for "One Last Summer." I chose the latter, and I'll do the former next week. After this, Laura and I went back to the character sheet. Rather than complete my protagonist sheet from last week, Laura suggested I start another one. He or she can be the antagonist, co-protagonist, or supporting character. She said that as an artist/storyteller, I have options. I have to ask myself, "what problems can occur that will keep the story going?" There doesn't have to be one single conflict, you can have many small ones. The antagonist(s) could ...

Day Eight: June 28th, 2018

Today, I finished reading the book Laura gave me yesterday, "The Short Con" by Aleks Seanwald and Pete Toms. After that, I read the first two issues of an original EEP book. As mentioned earlier, I am not allowed to discuss anything EEP creates, therefore I can't say the name of this book series. My last reading of the day was DC Comic's "Shade the Changing Girl; Issue one: 'Earth Girl Made Easy.'" After reading each story, I completed my usual coverage letters and sent them to Laura. Next, Laura and I started discussing my pitch for the end of the summer. She sent me a "character sheet" Word document. This will help me establish everything about my characters before I even layout my story, and it consists of literally everything a character needs to be three-dimensional. This includes his physical appearance (height, weight, eye and hair color, distinguishable marks, nationality, etc.), background (hometown, first memory, religious views...

Day Seven: June 27th, 2018

This week, Laura sent me episodes two and three of EEP's original podcast, I read them and did coverage for both. She also sent me various formulas for storytelling, one of which was from Joseph Campbell. After completing coverage on the podcast, Laura assigned me two illustrated books and a comic by DC comics to read and do coverage for. While reading the first book, Laura called me into another room. For the first time this summer, Adam talked with me (and Laura) about my progress throughout the internship. We went through all the coverage letters I have done up until this point. Overall, the meeting went well. We went over the three-act structure again, and one of my mistakes was confusing a character's wants with his or her needs. Wants and needs are both about inner-conflict, but that is as similar as they get. Laura will send me more links on story structure in the near future. They both stated that Star Wars (particular Episode IV) is a business model touchstone an...
